Sustainability & Ethical Sourcing

Our Commitment to People, Planet & Craft

At Soul Chocolate, every bar begins with a relationship, not a commodity price. We source directly from farmers and cooperatives who share our belief that great chocolate should leave the world better than it found it.

Fair Trade & Beyond

We don't just meet fair trade standards, we exceed them. Here's what that looks like in practice across our current single-origin bars:

Bar Fair Trade Premium Local Market Premium
Ecuador 75% Dark +126% above Fair Trade price +149% above local market
Colombia 85% Dark +13% above Fair Trade price +50% above local market
Mountain Flake Salt 70% +8% above Fair Trade price +12% above local market

What We Mean by Single-Origin

"Single-origin" is a term the chocolate industry uses broadly — and without a universal regulatory definition. At Soul Chocolate, we use it to mean that every bean in a bar comes from one identified source. What that source looks like varies by how closely we can trace the supply chain:

  • Country-level — the cacao is sourced exclusively from one country, but may blend beans from multiple farms or cooperatives within it.
  • Region-level — sourced from a specific growing region (such as Huila, Colombia), narrowing provenance to a distinct terroir.
  • Farm or cooperative-level — the highest level of traceability, where a named farm or farmer-owned cooperative supplies the beans.

Our labels and the supplier detail below tell you exactly which level applies to each bar. Because the term carries no legally mandated standard, we publish our sourcing specifics so you can judge for yourself:

  • Camino Verde (Ecuador 75% Dark) — farm-level traceability to Camino Verde estate in Ecuador, sourced through Meridian Cacao.
  • Osito Coffee (Colombia 85% Dark) — region-level traceability to the Huila region of Colombia, a high-altitude growing area with a distinct flavour profile.
  • Oko-Caribe (Dominican Republic) — cooperative-level traceability to this farmer-owned organic cooperative.

If you ever want to know more about the provenance of a specific bar, reach out to us directly — transparency is foundational to how we work.

Named Suppliers. Real Relationships.

We name our suppliers because anonymity is the enemy of accountability.

  • Camino Verde — Ecuador | Sourced through Meridian Cacao, a direct-trade intermediary committed to transparency
  • Osito Coffee — Huila region, Colombia | A small cooperative producing exceptional high-altitude cacao
  • Oko-Caribe — Dominican Republic | A farmer-owned cooperative with decades of organic cacao expertise
  • Vancouver Island Salt Co. — British Columbia, Canada | Our local partner for the hand-harvested flake salt in our Mountain Flake Salt bar

We also work with Akesson's Organic (Madagascar), Native Green Cane Project (Brazil), and other carefully vetted partners as our range grows.

The Labour Behind the Bar

Bean-to-bar chocolate is labour-intensive by design. We think that's a feature, not a bug. Here's how our cost structure reflects that:

Bar Ingredients Labour
Ecuador 75% Dark 47% 53%
Colombia 85% Dark 51% 49%
Mountain Flake Salt 70% 38% 62%

When you buy a Soul Chocolate bar, more than half of what you pay goes toward the people who make it — from the farmer to the finisher.

Packaging That Doesn't Outlive the Chocolate

Every Soul Chocolate pouch is:

  • Recyclable — designed to be returned to the material cycle, not the landfill
  • Soy ink printed — no petroleum-based inks
  • Designed to leave no trace

Our Promise

We're not perfect, and we're not done. Sustainability is a direction, not a destination. We publish these numbers because we believe transparency is the first step toward accountability — and because you deserve to know exactly what you're supporting when you choose Soul Chocolate.
